Papendrecht, 3 April 2009
Royal Boskalis Westminster N.V. has been awarded the contract for the extension of the cruise terminal in Nassau from the Ministry of Works and Transport of the Government of the Bahamas. The contract is worth approximately USD 44 million and the project will be completed in the first six months of 2010.
To handle the latest generation of mega-cruisers of the "Genesis" class, the Government of the Bahamas has ordered the port's cruiser terminal to be extended. Part of the extension must be completed by late 2009 in order to welcome Royal Caribbean's mega-cruise vessel "Oasis of the Seas".
The assignment includes the extension and widening of the entrance channel and will be executed with a jumbo cutter suction dredger. Approximately 1.5 million cubic meters of sand and rock will be dredged which will be used to enlarge an existing island close to the cruise terminal. A subcontractor will construct a new dam wall around the island and build a number of new mooring dolphins for cruise liners.
The Boskalis market is driven by long-term factors such as increases in the global population, the growth of the global economy and international trade volumes, and developments on the energy markets. Boskalis responds successfully to these factors with a broad geographical spread and a selective contracting strategy. This project in the Caribbean focuses on tourism driven harbor development and fits well within the broadly spread order book of Boskalis.
